Fructus Ventris by SILENTJUSTICE Fructus Ventris by SILENTJUSTICE
Oil on canvas
74 x 54 cms. (28.9 inch. x 21.1)

This was my entry for a painting contest in my country about realistic painting. First I had to present a pic of my work after that the judges chose only 22 as finalists. Mine was chosen so I had to show the original work framed. Finally I didn't win but my picture is being exhibited in the museum with the other 21 paintings.

"Fructus Ventris"
This painting represents a pregnant woman. The fruit represents her baby and she is showing the fruit asking for mercy cuz the baby has a heart failure and can die soon therefore there is a black shadow around her representing the death.

I tried to put some of green in the background representing a lil hope she has. The blue clothes recalls to me the image of Virgen Mary as mother at the same time the blues mean to me the prayers around the situation making think of the sky and therefore to Heaven, like waiting for a kind of miracle.

The colour of her skin represent the humanity, her eyes were crying and now she is kinda complaining but trying to find a bit of help asking for mercy.

The fruit represents the lil baby inside. The fruit brings the vivid colour representing the life, an alive human being, that small, that defenceless, but that is already fighting for surviving.

I prepared during a month studies in pencils to study the shapes and features, then the next month I dedicated like 8 hours at day during 22 days after that I took a week to varnish and putting the frame.

A mix of Caravaggio and Vermeer..the green really brings in the ''patina'' of the old masters, great piece

It's like looking at the work of an old master, particularly with the intended symbolism within the painting. Outstanding.

My man cave is covered with pictures of American and Russian spaceships. Portraits of scientists and writers and Star Trek memorabilia.

It would be nice to have a real piece of art there.

Personnally, I don't see how you did not at least place in that competition. Did they somehow resurrect the great Italian and French masters to compete?

well, I created this composition and painted it from the pic I took and Ip ainted it using grids too so everything is exactly as in the pic, the same size and proportion, but I think sometimes the camera can make a perspective distortion and I shot to the face of the model so it could make the hands where out of the objective of the camera and it didnt catch the real proportion. After this observation I went to check some paintigns of Rubens and Rembrandt and actually I noticed for example how they play with the perspective re sizing the hands or elementes in close up from their sight...so I decided since then that next time I paint from a pic I'll take not only a pic but 3 one for the face, other ones for two hands cuz even I noticed the face of the modle was very detailed on the pic but the hands got a bit blurry.. so I oculd take a specific pic for each hand or any other particular element hehe.. Finally i thanked to the guys for talking about the hands of my painting haaha :D now i have more ideas .. Thanks btw for ur support

Maybe I am not an art critic, but just assuming I don't know the subject of your painting, or if it was created from your mind based on your own observations, I would not fault the hands.

Perhaps she was malnourished, or suffered from a disease in childhood.

But I understand that in art there is "theory" and a sense or proportion that may not reflect reality. It's art, not chemistry. Does it move a person? Does it speak? It is subjective. It can not be quantified.

In my book... I still want a print, preferably signed.
